EACC Launches Probe into Thika Magistrate Stellah Atambo Over Bribery Allegations

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has initiated an investigation into alleged bribery involving Chief Magistrate Stellah Bonareri Nyaboke Atambo of Thika Law Courts. The probe was launched following multiple complaints that accused the magistrate of soliciting and receiving bribes from defendants in criminal cases before her court.

Allegations and Evidence

According to the EACC, complaints suggest that bribes were collected through Patrick Njeri Muriithi, a court clerk working under Magistrate Atambo. The commission alleges that money exchanges took place on several occasions, fueling suspicions of deep-rooted corruption within the judiciary. The investigation gained further momentum when it emerged that the magistrate had obtained a court order intended to halt the probe.

Search and Seizure Operation

On Thursday, March 13, 2025, EACC officers, armed with search warrants, conducted raids at the residences of both Magistrate Atambo and the clerk, Muriithi. The operation was aimed at securing documents and other evidence relevant to the bribery allegations. During the search, officers recovered Sh2,070,000 in cash hidden in a laptop bag at the magistrate’s residence. Several documents, believed to be critical to the investigation, were also seized.

Next Steps in the Investigation

Both Magistrate Atambo and Patrick Njeri Muriithi have been taken to the EACC headquarters for questioning. EACC Secretary and Chief Executive Officer Abdi A. Mohamud confirmed the operation, emphasizing the commission’s commitment to eradicating corruption from public offices, including the judiciary. Investigators are now working to determine the full extent of the bribery scheme and to identify any additional individuals involved.

Implications for the Judiciary

The probe into Magistrate Atambo underscores broader concerns about corruption within the judicial system. With allegations of bribery emerging in one of Thika’s key courts, the investigation could have far-reaching implications for public trust and the integrity of Kenya’s legal system.
